    My wife is from Wuxi China and my first time visiting her hometown, we visited her old home which was also being torn down for a high rise. We were young and I never noticed that the photos I took at the time were very different from what I take now. I missed a lot of moments, such as her visiting her old home, but I am grateful I can go back, look at my photos from that trip and mentally recall these scenes. I can remember the way she felt that day, the food we ate, and our lives at the time. Great video, and great work!

    I like trying out different cameras but prices being what they are I'm in the camp of match good optics with your film. I love my Holgas but film is too expensive to experiment. If you like the TLR experience then it is worth lookingat the Rolliflex.

    @02:00 you say the Profoto flash needs to be brand specific for the trigger. This is ONLY true for the TTL remote but that is because the pin connectors are different for sony, nikon, canon etc (hardly protofoto fault). If you buy the plain Profoto Air Remote it is universal (works with all brands) and has PC sync cord. No one uses TTL at this level anyway... I use the profoto remote for Mamiya, hasselblad, leica etc and it is wireless because the remote attaches to the camera and the hot/cold shoe which triggers strobe. RZ67 & hasselblad have pc sync port and you plug a small cord into the Air Remote (has a pc sync port). You need the right attachments for Leica film cameras and Mr Leica on his youtube channel explains it, but any Impact cold shoe adapter with pc cable works (b&h). Sam, you bought the right profoto strobe but wrong remote trigger.

    Look at yourself in your bw video! The contrast between your dark hair and pale smooth skin attracts my view and also the eyes and the lips gain attention. I think in color it would look more “average”. ❤🎉 Great video. 👏

    My Minolta x700 was a $20 flea market find! It was in new condition and only needed a battery change! I recently got the scans back from my first roll of film. The pictures it produced were amazing! I used a Minolta 50mm 1.4 lens. My first roll of film was Kodak pro image 100.

    Hi from Ireland , you are really comparing apples to oranges - holiday photos and you went with a plan to the book fair was it . Anyway the camera can make a difference too even to people posing they see a big old medium format or a canon 1v they feel important , and take you seriously . You slow down with the larger format and it costs more so maybe more considered . I think going with a plan even if it its to have no plan is important , the latter is prescribed when you are taking your work too seriously . Holiday snaps are just memories just because you are a photographer you are expecting magic too .

    I understand you. I upgraded my 35mm cameras by getting APO lenses for them. Zeiss Otus 55 and 100. Then I also got apo lenses for my Leica. After that, I gave up medium format cuz those lenses are just so great. I sold all my medium format cameras 3 years ago. I only shoot film, no digital.

    Keep it up. monochrome takes time to learn. Keep at it you will appreciate it over time. It took me a while. For your next challenge, try shooting slide film. Do NOT overexpose. For more saturation 1/3 underexposure at best. Over exposure flattens it out and makes it look bland. Your exposure has to be dead on. Good luck and keep up the good work. BTW congradulations on the 67II. I bought one brand new years ago. Great camera.

If you haven’t seen the film Fiddler on the Roof, you might like to watch it. It’s about generational change and cultural traditions. There is another great Swedish pair of films called The Emigrants and The New Land you might appreciate. Also check out the photographs by Zaharia Cusnir recently found in Moldova. hi, I really did not understood, why you adjusted the aperture of the Hasselblad back and forth in order to have a brighter image on the viewfinder? You can set it slower but you will still see the fmax on your viewfinder. Am i missing something? Nice shooting by the way and for the HP500 is that much overexposing not a problem.

    Hi Sam. I usually carry two bodies that share lenses (a Nikon FE2 and F 100 or a Flex and a Cord in my case). One for color and the other for B&W. It was confusing at first but I found that looking for colors OR lines and curves sorted out which to shoot. Something else that helped me was to have a cheat sheet on what I want to find during the day. I call it Abstract Editorial (la-de-da right?) and give myself bonus points if someone else can work out what I was trying to capture. Buying bulk 35mm B&W film so that you can tailor how many shots to a roll also helps to keep you from spreading a roll over two or six outings. Thanks for your work- a random mike

    I have been shooting since 1970 and have always shot a mix of B/W, C-41 and slide film. Color calls attention to itself becasue of the color while B/W is more about contrast and shapes. There are images that work in either but there are just as many that are either B/W or color but not both. That is why I like my Hasselblad 500 series cameras and my Mamiya RB67, they have interchangeable backs. That way I always the right film with me for the image I'm shooting. One back with color and one back with B/W.

    Lots of trash and irrelevant elements or components that distract or subtract attention from your photography. You might review your composition skills. There is no vision, neither in color nor in light control… It is very difficult to discern what purpose, the center of attention or main character is. Tips: If you sing, try singing or flip burgers. You can not encourage others if you do not have confidence in yourself and no gray matter in your brain. You, like many other millennials and UA-camrs, hold a camera to look cool, want viewers and likes for their Instagram and social platform posts… After reviewing these images and listening to your words, it is clear you do not have an eye for photography. Try other endeavors and good luck!

    Sam there is prisms for it, and also importantly a grip, at the bottom, with a prism attached this grip makes the 500 look like an old school policemen's' radar gun, or a Bolex 8mm movie camera .

    I find myself shooting more B&W these days. I used to only use it to test cameras / lenses as it is easier and faster to develop (I use a monobath for B&W.) It seems the reason why I am shooting more of it now is because I feel more accomplished if I have a couple good shots per roll. With color film I easily get a lot of "keepers" whereas with B&W I do not, so when I actually take a B&W pic that doesn't suck - it feels more special. Lol.

    That image of the older couple is award winning Sam. Seriously! To your point whether you should shoot black and white vs. color, you do great with both. Color presents possibilities, but color is only hues. Without the value scale you'd have nothing but flat images. You rocked this. Great images and great lessons here.

    at 13:50 what is happening is you are what Ansel Adams called "pre-visualising", seeing what you want in the print, and being B&W adapted this 'sight' sees how you want to view the scene in mono, so you know intuitively what will work.

  • @andyvan5692
    @andyvan5692 13 днів тому

    also the cloudy day allows one to utilise the shallow dof the mf lens and format provides, so you can open up, and use the f 3.5 or f 2.8 on them, so adding extra subject separation, bokeh, etc. which a hard light of EV 15+ wouldn't allow.

  • @andyvan5692
    @andyvan5692 13 днів тому

    one other tip Sam, cloudy days are your FRIEND in MF in this format all lenses are telephoto as compare the 35mm format cousins, and as such are Way more sensitive to glare, flare and motion blur, so cloudy days are natures natural softbox , diffusing the light and reducing contrast, keeping highlight tones in zone 9 where we can see them, and not blow out.

  • @andyvan5692
    @andyvan5692 13 днів тому

    hey Sam, one solution, if you shoot with a hasselblad, bronica, or Mamiya RB\RZ camera you can change the film Magasine, so you can shoot BOTH and switch between colour & B&W stocks MID shoot!! how cool ! your Pentax is a 135 format style slr so once you load up, you Must finish before you change, this is one disadvantage of this style of camera.
